LECTURE 2 | Armenians in the Medieval Period: Art and Society

Our knowledge of Armenians in the medieval period comes mostly from their vast cultural production during this time. This lecture explores what the visual and material cultures of Armenia, including churches and monasteries, manuscripts, carved cross stones (khatchkars) and other arts tell us about the lived experience and social conditions of Armenians in the medieval period. Being at the crossroads of various civilisations, Armenian culture was both influenced by and in turn influenced others. Its art and architecture reflect these cross-fertilisations. Rich in visual materials, the lecture analyses medieval Armenian culture and situates it within regional and global contexts.

Christina Maranci is the Mashtots Professor of Armenian Studies at Harvard University. She earned a BA in art history at Vassar, and an M.A. and Ph.D at Princeton. Her work explores the art and culture of Armenia in all aspects, including architecture, but with special emphasis on the late antique and medieval periods. She is the author of four books and over 100 articles and essays, including most recently, The Art of Armenia (Oxford UP, 2018). Her 2015 monograph, Vigilant Powers: Three Churches of Early Medieval Armenia (Brepols, 2015) won the Karen Gould Prize for Art History from the Medieval Academy of America, and a prize from the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research. She is co-founder of “East of Byzantium,” a workshop and lecture series designed to support graduate students working on the Christian East. Maranci also works on issues of cultural heritage, focusing on at-risk Armenian churches and monasteries in what is now Eastern Turkey.

O nosso conhecimento dos arménios no período medieval provém sobretudo da sua vasta produção cultural durante esta época. Esta palestra explora o que as culturas visual e material da Arménia, incluindo igrejas e mosteiros, manuscritos, cruzes esculpidas (khatchkars) e outras artes, nos dizem sobre a experiência vivida e as condições sociais dos arménios no período medieval. Situada na encruzilhada de várias civilizações, a cultura arménia foi influenciada e, por sua vez, influenciou outras. A sua arte e arquitetura reflectem estas fertilizações cruzadas. Rica em materiais visuais, a palestra analisa a cultura arménia medieval e situa-a em contextos regionais e globais.

Christina Maranci é professora de Estudos Arménios na Universidade de Harvard. Licenciou-se em História da Arte em Vassar e obteve um mestrado e um doutoramento em Princeton. O seu trabalho explora a arte e a cultura da Arménia em todos os aspectos, incluindo a arquitetura, com especial ênfase nos períodos antigo e medieval tardios. É autora de quatro livros e de mais de 100 artigos e ensaios, incluindo, mais recentemente, The Art of Armenia (Oxford UP, 2018). A sua monografia de 2015, Vigilant Powers: Three Churches of Early Medieval Armenia (Brepols, 2015) ganhou o Prémio Karen Gould de História da Arte da Academia Medieval da América e um prémio da Associação Nacional de Estudos e Investigação Arménia.
