LECTURE 1 | Armenian Christianity: An Introduction

What is Armenian Christianity? What is the Armenian Church? Is it Orthodox or Catholic? How is it different from other churches? This lecture presents the history, faith, liturgy, hierarchy, the social context, as well as contemporary issues facing one of the ancient churches in Christianity, whose roots date back to the early apostolic times. The Armenians are known to be the first nation to have adopted Christianity as state religion in the early 4th century. The overwhelming majority of Armenians in Armenia and the Diaspora adheres, at least nominally, to the Christian faith. What is the relevance and role of this church that celebrated its 1700th anniversary in 2001? This and other questions are explored during the presentation and the open discussion that follows it.
Hratch Tchilingirian is a sociologist, a leading expert on the Armenian Diaspora, and contemporary Christian communities in the Middle East. Since 2012, he is Associate Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Oxford, specialising in Armenian and Middle Eastern Studies, with a particular focus on identity politics, religion and homeland-diaspora relations. He is director of the Armenian Diaspora Survey, a major research project funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which conducts public opinion studies in the Diaspora. He is the author of numerous studies, including monographs, academic articles and other publications. He has lectured internationally at leading universities, academic institutions and international NGOs on minorities in contemporary Middle East, inter-ethnic conflicts in the Caucasus, Armenian Christianity and the Diaspora (www.hratch.info).
The opening session will take place before the begining of the first lecture. Professor Miguel Tamen (Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon), Professor António M. Feijó (President of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation), Professor Hermenegildo Fernandes (Director of the Area of History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon), Dr. Vahe Mkhitarian (President of the Portugal Armenia Friendship Association) and Dr. Razmik Panossian (Director of the Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation) will introduce the cycle. Afterwards there will be a reception with port of honor offered by the organization.

O que é o cristianismo arménio? O que é a Igreja Arménia? É ortodoxa ou católica? Em que é que é diferente das outras igrejas? Esta conferência apresenta a história, a fé, a liturgia, a hierarquia, o contexto social e as questões contemporâneas de uma das mais antigas igrejas do cristianismo, cujas raízes remontam aos primeiros tempos apostólicos. Os arménios são conhecidos por terem sido a primeira nação a adotar o cristianismo como religião de Estado, no início do século IV. A esmagadora maioria dos arménios na Arménia e na diáspora adere, pelo menos nominalmente, à fé cristã. Qual é a relevância e o papel desta igreja que celebrou o seu 1700.º aniversário em 2001? Estas e outras questões são exploradas durante a apresentação e o debate aberto que se lhe segue.
Hratch Tchilingirian é sociólogo e um dos principais especialistas na diáspora arménia e nas comunidades cristãs contemporâneas no Médio Oriente. Desde 2012, é Professor Associado de Estudos Asiáticos e do Médio Oriente na Universidade de Oxford, especializando-se em Estudos Arménios e do Médio Oriente, com especial incidência nas políticas de identidade, religião e relações entre a pátria e a diáspora. O Dr. Tchilingirian é o diretor do Armenian Diaspora Survey, um importante projeto de investigação financiado pela Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, que realiza estudos de opinião pública na diáspora. É autor de numerosos estudos, incluindo monografias, artigos académicos e outras publicações. Tem proferido conferências internacionais em importantes universidades, instituições académicas e ONG internacionais sobre minorias no Médio Oriente contemporâneo, conflitos interétnicos no Cáucaso, cristianismo arménio e a diáspora (www.hratch.info).
O primeiro seminário será precedido por uma sessão de inauguração do ciclo que contará com a presença do Professor Doutor Miguel Tamen (Director da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa), do Professor Doutor António M. Feijó (Presidente da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian), do Professor Doutor Hermenegildo Fernandes (Director da Área de História da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa), do Doutor Vahe Mkhitarian (Presidente da Associação de Amizade Portugal-Arménia) e do Doutor Razmik Panossian (Director do Serviço das Comunidades Arménias da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian). Seguir-se-á um porto de honra oferecido pela organização.
