Uses of the Past
Coordinator: Sérgio Campos Matos
Co-coordinator: Covadonga Valdaliso
The Uses of the Past Research Group brings together researchers and lecturers from a range of chronologies – from Ancient History to Contemporary History – who are interested in studying the processes of constructing social memories and historiographies in relation to political cultures in different contexts. Historical cultures are considered from a variety of perspectives, ranging from the long-term to more limited and precise time frames. This group takes a very broad approach to the concepts of historical memory and social memory, with a view to the following thematic strands:
- Historiographies, historians, historical representations;
- Individual and collective memories (from the local to the global);
- Receptions of the past, politics of memory and forgetting;
- The environment, relations between humans and non-humans in a transdisciplinary perspective.
It also aims at a broad critical reflection on the relationship between the present, the past, and the future, the multiple writings of history and the different ways of using the past in different periods and geographies.
The contributions of the RG stimulate a research that involves transnational transfers. They encourage a reflexive theoretical stance and challenge the practice of history in different areas of the Centre for History of the University of Lisbon.
The Research Group works in partnership with the National Library of Portugal (BNP) and several international groups and projects. The Dictionary of Portuguese Historians and the publication of electronic editions of historiographical texts through EGPA (Escritório Galego-Português Antigo) are permanent initiatives of the RG.
