Military History
Coordinator: Augusto Salgado
The Military History Research Group aims to explore the complexities of war, its theory and practice across a wide range of topics, from Antiquity to the Contemporary World, focusing on the relationships between technological advances, social changes, philosophical debates, and economic pressures, and how these factors have changed the phenomenon of war and have been shaped by it.
The activities of this RG will be structured around four main strands of analysis:
- Armed conflict and territorial expansion (coexistence, synergy, social consequences);
- Theory and practice of war;
- Military technology and technical innovation (weaponry, fortification, logistics);
- Cultural dynamics and effects of war.
The activities of the RG aim to promote a reassessment of historiography in a broad chronological spectrum in the fields of terrestrial and maritime military history and archaeology. Being the only Portuguese university RG specifically dedicated to military history, it organises international congresses in this field. It has increased the impact of its work in society through the transfer of knowledge and the support of several initiatives, such as the seminars/workshops “Winter Campaigns”, “War in the Feminine”, and “Scars of War”.
