Court Studies and Diplomacy
Coordinator: Manuela Santos Silva
The Court Studies and Diplomacy Research Group is focused on the historical phenomenon of ‘Monarchy’ in its various aspects, with a specific focus on the establishment and organization of royal and princely households, along with their associated courts, in a broad chronological and geographical context. The research seeks to consider these phenomena from an international and comparative perspective, bringing together political, economic, cultural, artistic and gender factors, with particular attention to diplomacy. On the other hand, from an anthropological point of view, the fact that many monarchies became hereditary from a very early stage also allows us to approach them as models of societies based on family prototypes, with everyday social practices that have become exemplary for the society they dominate.
In addition to the organisation of international colloquia, the RG has promoted regular conferences and workshops, in particular the Symposia on Family History (I-2022), (II-2023) and the Symposia on Court Studies and Diplomacy (I - 2016 to XX - 2022).
