This project aims to collecting and systematizing the bio-bibliographic materials concerning the most prominent elements of the Italian communities that lived in Portugal between the 14th and the 18th centuries. The chief end product of this research will be the publication of a dictionary. Through the consultation of bibliographic and other sources, published and unpublished, held in Italian and Portuguese archives, this project aims to systematise the information relative to biographic itineraries of the Italians who carried out their activities in the Portuguese kingdom, or who circulated on the major international routes in which Portuguese goods and interests also flowed. Despite the considerable collection of works published in Portugal, and also in Italy, on the Italian communities residing within Portuguese territories, much of which is composed of biographical studies of a few prominent Italians for their knowledge in the various fields of scientific inquiry (nautical, cartographic, commercial, artistic, among others), further research remains to be done, particularly in the archives, as well as the task of providing a credible and systematic form to the information already available.
