Nearly 50 years ago, frightened and in many ways unprepared, I landed in Senegal to begin a year of fieldwork among rural communities of rice farmers in the Casamance. My experience then was closer to the situations of Malinowski or the early British anthropologists, 100 years ago, than to the contemporary researcher.
