The chapters compiled in this book explore the intersections between the colonial historical past and contemporary times. They stem from the authors’ efforts to address the challenge of reflecting on the diverse realities of Brazil in the context of the Bicentennial of Brazil’s Independence. Thus, the interfaces of Brazil, past and present, intertwine to address pressing issues that traverse history: the legacy of slavery; the present conditions that subject free individuals to modern slavery; the struggles of marginalized populations, including Indigenous peoples and enslaved individuals, and their forms of resistance; the issue of access to land, intertwined with the historical and contemporary debate over property; the boundaries of Brazil as they were historically conceived and how they shaped the nation; and the independence wars and their connections to Latin America. From our current vantage point, we critically examine the past, aiming to contribute to an informed debate about the constitution of our societies and identities.<\/p>\n
