Singular in its chronological transversality, the Centre is organised into five Research Groups: Cultural Encounters and Intersecting Societies, Building and Connecting Empires, Court Studies and Diplomacy, Military History and Uses of the Past.

Housed in the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, the Centre has undergone several transformations over its six decades of existence. The scientific fields of Archaeology and History of Art gained autonomy in 1994 and 2007 respectively, becoming independent research centres within the History Department of the School of Arts and Humanities. In 2015, the Centre incorporated the Centre for History of the expired Institute for Tropical Scientific Research (IICT), as well as its staff of career researchers.

In the last decade, the research carried out at CH-ULisboa has seen a decisive increase in its internationalisation, reflected in the number of researchers who are part of international scientific projects and networks, in the organisation of (and presence at) international meetings, and in the dissemination of the work of its researchers in leading journals and publishers. Alongside its research activities, the Centre has strengthened its commitment to collaborating with civil society through various initiatives designed to disseminate the work of its researchers and to ensure that the academic conception of history, its methods and its contributions reach non-academic audiences in an increasingly direct way, broadening their impact. This dynamic favours the valorisation of History as an essential area for understanding the contemporary world and, at the same time, aims for society to benefit from academic advances in order to face current challenges. In a time that is perceived to be constantly accelerating, the Centre has been able and continues to be able to adapt, responding to the scientific and social demands that constantly emerge, as well as the urgencies that require new perspectives and approaches.

Over 60 years since its founding, the Centre for History at the University of Lisbon remains dedicated to advancing and sharing innovative historical research within the global scientific community and the society.

Founded in 1958 by Professor Virgínia Rau, the Centre for History of the University of Lisbon (CH-ULisboa) is one of the oldest historical sciences research units in Portugal and, thereby, a reference.
