Vicente Martins holds a Bachelor’s degree in History and a Master’s with a specialization in Medieval History, from the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Medieval History at the same institution. He’s working on a thesis titled “”Recebo-te por minha, recebo-te por meu”: the legal evolution of family and matrimonial issues in Leonese, Castilian, and Portuguese legislation (12th-15th centuries)”, for which he was granted a Scholarship (2024.03218.BD) from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia.

Throughout his academic career, he has demonstrated a particular interest in family and sexual issues from a legal perspective, focusing on the study of various legal codes used in Medieval Iberia. His PhD research aims to further explore these topics, with a specific emphasis on differentiating legal theory from actual practices in the day-to-day lives of Medieval Leonese, Castilian, and Portuguese populations.

He presented a paper on family and matrimonial dynamics in the Fuero Juzgo and the Fuero Real at the I Jornadas sobre História da Família, organized by the Centre for History at the University of Lisbon (CH-ULisboa). Additionally, he participated in the ASPHS Annual Conference in July 2024, presenting on male and female sexual agency and issues of paternal authority in the Fuero Juzgo and the Fuero Real, and in the Jornadas Internacionais de Idade Média, in October 2024, presenting on family and sexual issues in Portuguese local legal charters. In 2025, he will present a paper at the International Congress on Medieval Studies (Kalamazoo, US), at the International Medieval Congress (Leeds, UK) and at Kings and Queens Conference (Lisbon, PT).

He is currently a research assistant at the Centre for History at the University of Lisbon (CH-ULisboa) and a member of the Court Studies and Diplomacy Research Group at the same institution, coordinated by Professor Manuela Santos Silva.
