Born in Lisbon (1944), she graduated in History from FLUL (1966). She obtained her PhD in 1984 with the thesis The Regencies during the Minority of King Sebastian. Elements for a Structural History. A disciple of Virgínia Rau and Jorge Borges de Macedo, she specialised in Modern History and, in 1991, presented her lecture for aggregation on the theme «Towards a history of Europe in the 16th century: typology of the regime and institutions». A professor since 1992, she retired in the 2005/2006 academic year.
