Manuel Leão Marques Lobato (b. 1956) has been an integrated researcher at the Centre of History of the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Arts, since 2015.

Published 94 book chapters, 31 articles in journals and 8 edited and co-edited books.

He has supervised several undergraduate research projects and master’s theses, in the fields of Asian history and the history of the Portuguese presence in the Indian Ocean.

Participated in 9 research projects, organised 11 events and attended 123 others, 45 of them abroad.

His areas of interest are Southeast Asia, the former Portuguese Estado da Índia, Malacca, Mozambique, the Moluccas, East-Timor and the Philippines, with a focus on issues related to Islam, Catholic missionary activities, miscegenation, military architecture and trade and power networks in the Indian Ocean.
