She is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, a researcher at the History Centre of the same Faculty, a corresponding academic of the Portuguese Academy of History, and a founding member of the History Teachers’ Association. She graduated in History with a dissertation entitled A Polémica sobre a Inquisição – desde os fins do século XVIII a 1821 (The Controversy over the Inquisition – from the end of the 18th century to 1821) and obtained her doctorate in Modern History with her thesis on Duarte Ribeiro de Macedo. A Modern Diplomat (1618-1680), which received the Aristides de Sousa Mendes Prize (2004) and was published by the MNE-IDI (2005) and the complementary thesis The Time of Diplomats. A study of the formation of modern diplomacy and its contribution to political decision-making. 1640/41-1736/50 which led to the book Os Arquitectos da Paz, published by Tribuna da História, 2009. In her aggregation exams, she presented a report on the seminar War and Diplomacy, from the Master’s Degree in History, and a lesson entitled Portuguese Neutrality. 1668-1704, published by Esfera do Caos, 2013. She has carried out studies in the areas of Diplomatic History and Diplomacy, with a special focus on the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. She was also awarded the Gulbenkian Prize for Modern and Contemporary Portuguese History by the APH (2009) and has published several papers. She has taught at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon since 1988. After her retirement, she continued to supervise the History of International Relations Seminar and master’s and doctoral theses in Modern and Contemporary History. At FLUL, she taught various subjects on the degree courses in History and History of Art and Heritage (Modern Portuguese Culture, Modern History of Portugal, Modern History and Culture) and on postgraduate courses in History (Construction of the Modern State, Diplomacy, International Relations, Dynastic Alliances and Networks of Power, Monarchy and the Royal House), History Teaching (Didactics of History and Social Sciences), History of Religions and Portuguese Culture. She has also taught at the Portuguese Catholic University (1996) and on the PhD course in History of Education and Comparative Education at the UL Institute of Education (2007-11). She has lectured on the History of Diplomacy and International Relations at other higher education institutions: European University (2016, 2017) and ISCEM (2012) and on the National Foreign Policy Course at the Diplomatic Institute-MNE (2007) and has collaborated with the UL Faculty of Law in teaching History of Law, at the invitation of Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (2008) and Professor Isabel Graes (2013 and 2017). She has supervised numerous master’s and doctoral theses, as well as curricular internship reports; she has taken part in juries and argued master’s and doctoral theses.
