Volunteering

The Volunteering Programme is an initiative of the Centre for the History of the University and Lisbon (CH-ULisboa) and the History Students’ Association of the Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon (NEH-FLUL). The aim of this programme is to involve undergraduate (History) and postgraduate (History, History and Culture of Religions, History of the Islamic and Medieval Mediterranean, Military History and History Teaching) students supported by the R&D Unit in the scientific activities of CH-ULisboa.

This academic year, the Volunteering Programme will consist of two phases:

  • 1st Phase: January – May (2nd semester). Completed
  • 2nd Phase: June – August (summer term).

Applications for the Volunteer Programme are made by completing a single form, which can be accessed via the following link: https://forms.gle/8f56GM5Cas4UvsyM6. This form, which relates to the call for applications for 2nd Phase, will remain open until 23:59 on 26th May 2026 and requires applicants to provide their name, contact details, course, the area of activity they are applying for, and a statement of motivation (max. 300 words). Those interested may apply for more than one area of activity.

The Volunteering Programme is open exclusively to students at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon who are enrolled on one of the courses mentioned above. This year, the Programme is organised around four key areas of activity:

Support for Academic Events

The Centre for History at the University of Lisbon is well known for its work in organising events for the dissemination of scientific knowledge. However, the successful delivery of these initiatives relies heavily on the support of volunteers who assist the organising committees in preparing and running the events, as well as in contacting guest speakers. The activities in this area are of a one-off nature. Calls for volunteers will be posted here in due course at the request of the organising committees of the scientific events organised by CH-ULisboa.

  • 2nd International Conference Women and Slavery: Violence, Resistance and Diasporas. 2nd-3rd June 2026. Link for the conference.
Support for CH-ULisboa Editions

CH-ULisboa has its own publishing house, which regularly publishes scientific works by the Centre’s researchers and by external researchers with whom the CH-ULisboa team collaborates. Selected students will have the opportunity to collaborate throughout the editorial process of preparing publications, specifically in tasks such as text revision and author support, with a view to acquiring knowledge of scientific editing in the field of History [2 places].

Support for CH-ULisboa Library

The Library of the Centre for History of the University of Lisbon holds a vast collection comprising works and documents of significance to history and other humanities; it also stands as a testament to the history of historiographical thought produced at the Faculty of Arts of Lisbon and the recently defunct Institute for Tropical Scientific Research. The CH-ULisboa takes on the responsibility of preserving, cataloguing and increasing access to this collection. Volunteers working in this area will support this work of organising and promoting the Library [2 places].

Support for the Digital Humanities

The growing focus on Digital Humanities, including their role in scientific dissemination, forms part of this programme’s agenda. The tasks comprising this strand will relate to the Centre’s efforts to preserve and digitally disseminate documentary collections, as well as to supporting the establishment and promotion of research networks. Students will also support the Centre in scientific outreach initiatives, notably future interview programmes and podcasts [2 places].
